On Sunday the Giants lost their 10th consecutive game losing to the Falcons 34-7. This is the first 10 game losing streak in the franchise’s 100 year existence and with only two weeks left in a forgettable 2024 campaign the New York Giants have the worst record in the NFL and the #1 pick in next year’s draft. The Giants haven’t had the number one pick since 1965. This could very well be the worst Giants team in history.
Despite the ineptitude of this team John Mara has stated publicly that Brian Daboll will be the coach next season which is not sitting well with many Giants fans. The Giants aren’t just losing, they have the lowest scoring offense in the NFL averaging just 14.3 points per game. Five times this season they’ve scored less than 10 points in a game, twelve times they’ve scored 20 or less. Five of their thirteen losses have been by more than 20 points and yesterday the Giants scored a second quarter touchdown then proceeded to give up 34 unanswered points to a rookie quarterback starting his first game in the NFL.
This Giants team shows no fight. They might not have the talent to be a winning team and they haven’t had a competent quarterback for most of this season but there are plenty of bad teams around the league but unlike the Giants, these teams find a way to be competitive in some games. There are multiple examples each week of bad teams upsetting a good team and embracing the role of “spoiler”. Yesterday it was the Panthers coming into the game at 3-11 beating a Cardinals team who’s season was on the line 36-30 in overtime.
There was also the 3-11 Patriots who went into Buffalo and gave one of the best teams in the NFL all they could handle in a three point loss.
The Giants could’ve played the spoiler role yesterday against a Falcons team who had been struggled recently, benched their big ticket starting quarterback in favor of a rookie starting his first game, a game where their playoff hopes were on the line. Instead of rising to the occasion and at minimum being competitive, the Giants let the rookie quarterback score 34 unanswered points in a 34-7 route.
That is just one of many signs that these players don’t wanna fight for their coach and once that happens it’s nearly impossible for the coach to get the locker room back.
This year has been an embarrassment for the Giants. They are winless in the division, one loss away from being winless at home and are non competitive for most of the season. To let this coach retain his job after a season like this with a team that doesn’t seem to want to fight for him would be a slap in the face to Giants fans everywhere.
